For my Self Directed Project, I have chosen to
further develop my knowledge of male tailoring through the construction of a
late Victorian/Edwardian jacket and trousers. I chose this project because I thoroughly
enjoyed the introduction to tailoring in the Defining Practice unit earlier
this year, and feel I will increase my learning and develop my skills.
I hope to broaden my contextual knowledge of
tailoring through research, both of the garments that I will be making and more
generally. This will include looking at the work of Whife and Bridgland, as
well as other tailors, practitioners and historians. I particularly enjoy the
research side of projects and am looking forward to expanding my knowledge and understanding
of this area.
As mentioned above, I aim to produce a
tailored jacket and at least part of the trousers for assessment. During the
project, I will be undertaking a four week work placement, making costumes for
this summer’s Olympics in London, which means I will miss the last 3 weeks of
the project. Because of this, my chief area of focus will be on the jacket,
although I am very keen to produce at least part of the trousers, as I want to
learn this valuable skill. My progress in making both garments will be
continually assessed to establish what I can make and hand in within the time
constraints. As my placement reduces the amount of tailoring I will be able to
produce, I will write a 1000 word essay on the placement.
Through completion of my placement, I hope to
gain a valuable insight into the professional environment and I am excited to
be given the opportunity to be part of the London Olympics.
It is also my intention to produce a workbook,
detailing the new skills and techniques I will have learnt, as I believe this
will be a valuable resource for me in the future. Throughout the project I will
also be writing a blog, which I will use to plan and evaluate my work. I am very
much looking forward to working independently, particularly as it will help me
to prepare for my third year work, where many of my projects will be conducted
in this way.

self-initiated, autonomous learning
and
develop the ability to plan time and work independently
